Biking in Gyeongju, the Best Way to Spend Korean Memorial Day

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile, I’ve gotten super busy with social media marketing ever since my new post at Aclipse as International Marketing Assistant. Check out my blog posts here, and follow me on twitter at @arieldrosen for more Korea updates!

Anyway, Thursday was Korean Memorial Day, so everyone got off work! My friends and I decided to travel to Gyeongju to ride bikes and check out some historical sites. Gyeongju was the capital of Silla, an ancient Korean dynasty, (57 BC – 935 AD). There is also an amusement park there! But we’re saving that for another trip. It takes about an hour and half to drive there from Busan, but the drive was beautiful so no worries. Ok, here come the photos!

A Thousand Years of Seoulitude: Weekend Return to Seoul!

Last weekend we had work off on Friday for Buddha’s Birthday, so we took the extra day and hopped on a bus to Seoul! Unlike my training week in Seoul a couple months ago, we had plenty of time to explore and be a tourist.

Temple Lights and a Rooftop Petting Zoo

This weekend we explored the Lotte Mall in Nopo, which we knew had some great panoramic views from the roof. We didn’t know the place was host to a fountain show on the first floor and a petting zoo on the roof though! So that was a pleasant surprise. After touring the mall, we headed over to the Samkwangsa Temple, to see the many lanterns they were preparing for Buddha’s birthday next week.

The amazing dancing fountain at the Lotte Mall in Nampo, not only did the bottom of the fountain sway to the beat, but the top of it let down mist in different patterns! It was pretty darn cool. And totally beat the Bellagio fountain, sorry guys.

Sweet Weekend Weather: The Beach and Gamcheon Village

Hey everyone! This weekend I hit the beach again! The weather is just too nice to stay inside or not listen to the waves while catching some rays. I also visited, and wandered around, Gamcheon Culture Village, which is a shamble of very colorful houses and steep narrow winding roads. It was pretty fun! Here are the photos:

This Weekend I Neglected My Camera

Sorry everyone! I kept forgetting my camera in my apartment this weekend. My excuse? I was very busy! I partook in a rooftop barbeque, makolli making, salsa dancing, nightclub endeavors, vagina monologues, and general wandering about. The rooftop bbq was held above a surf shop that also sold vespas! It was awesome and we could see the sea. There was good food and great people and we didn’t get back too too late. The next day I learned how to make makolli, a korean carbonated rice wine that is super tasty. We mixed together some yeast, rice and pine needles and it is fermenting still as I write this. After that, it was off to salsa dancing! Where I perfected my two step, and tried my best to keep up in basic salsa moves 101, which was the counting to 6 and twirling bit. After that lesson we watched in awe as some Korean salsa professionals began to fill the room. They were amazing, and all had their own unique flair, an extra kick in their dancing style. For each song they switched up partners, but that did not faze them at all. It was so fun to watch!

Next we heated up the floor on our own, by visiting a Korean club in Haundae beach. It was classic club stuff, with blarring music and bright lights, but also at one point a man with a trumpet played along! The next day I supported a friend by watching the dress rehearsal of The Vagina Monologues Busan, which made me laugh and cry, and was in general, a killer show. Unfortunately I’ll miss the real thing next weekend because I will be at the Parting of the Sea Festival in Jindo. I promise to take pictures then!

As a side note, I am now an official working person here, as I’ve got my ARC card, my internet, and my bank account all set, and I’ve received my first paycheck! Hoorah!

See you all later,

One More Weekend Comes to a Close

Time moves so quickly here! I’ve already got my third week under my belt. fourth, if you count training in Seoul. Highlights From Last Weekend’s Holi Fest and This Weekend’s Trick Eye Museum!

I found some forgotten photos from last weekend’s Holi Fest, which is an Indian celebration to welcome spring. Everyone throws powdered color or paint at each other and dances and it’s really fun. I’m definitely ready for spring now. Phew! Here are some photo highlights:

So that was Holi, this weekend was also ripe for picture taking as we visited the Trick Eye Museum, a museum that was all sets for you to take pictures in. The sets and poses to take were pretty much endless, rooms and rooms and rooms. It was actually pretty exhausting haha. It was a rainy day though, so we had plenty of time to mosey through and laugh at ourselves. Here are some of the trickier ones, hard to tell if I’m real or a part of the pictures, right? Right?! Ok maybe not.

Exploring Busan Part 1: Cherry Blossom Hike!

This weekend I decided to explore my new city. My friend told me about a path that bridged Haundae beach (super close to me) and Songjeong Beach and went straight through where I’m living, Jangsan. She also assured me that it’s ripe with cherry blossoms at the moment. Needing no further convincing, we set out straight away!
