The Immense Journey: An Imaginative Naturalist Explores the Mysteries of Man and Nature by Loren Eiseley Vintage (1959) Paperback
This book makes me want to be a naturalist! Although not directly about art, Eiseley so poetically describes his musings on life and nature that art is unintentionally held between the pages. My favorite essays were the last, about ‘the secret of life’ and the second, ‘the flow of the river’, describing the mysticalities of water. A poignant passage contends that men are not more than “a way that water has of going about beyond the reach of rivers” as everything alive is nine tenths water.
This paperback is a perfect park read and beautifully written. It really gives you a different perspective and deeper understanding of things encountered on an everyday basis, like birds. It’s fantastic!
